A Case of Mistaken Identity
We continue our exploration of the book Birthing a Greater Reality by Robert Brumet this Sunday.
Last Sunday we took a deep dive into the exploration of the structures of consciousness as a means for considering how consciousness (awareness) has evolved for humanity as a whole. This week we will consider how that process occurs within us individually.
Brumet sets the stage by sharing the work of German philosopher, scientist and mystic Jean Gebser who “conceptualized these structures of consciousness by how they lead us to experience the world itself. Each structure has its unique outlook, its unique way of interpreting reality. This theory states that the mental structure of consciousness remains the dominate mode in our world today. This structure is reflected in the modern self-reflective ego system” (Brumet, pg. 45).
Within this structure, “objectivity began to take on a new meaning as the ego identified its location as a point separated and distanced from the rest of the world. Our sense of self no longer resided in the body but in the head” (Brumet, pg. 46).

While it certainly serves as an important survival mechanism, the sense of self formed by our ego identity is not who we really are. Due to its functional limits, the ego cannot even conceive of our true identity, as Spirit. This is what conscious evolution is calling us to wake up to.
“Wisdom teachings agree that who we really are, our true nature exists in a realm beyond time and space; that awareness becomes lost after Spirit incarnates in human form through the process of involution" (Brumet, pg. 70).
"The true self is Spirit itself-- infinite and eternal- and our sense of a separate self is actually an illusion created by the human mind. The cause of all human suffering lies in the mistaken belief that our separated personal self is our true self and that it is real. This is humanity’s case of mistaken identity. The only permanent end to human suffering lies in awakening to the truth of who we really are. This is the direction of conscious evolution” (Brumet, pg. 72).
As Brumet puts it, “You are Spirit calling itself me” (pg. 66)
The invitation is for us to become more aware of our own inner world and how it is we have come to create a ‘false self’ that then obstructs our path to knowing the fullness of our true essence.

We continue this week with considering the functionality and limitations of our personal ego.
