Pulled From Above

 We are continuing our Sunday series based on  the book, Birthing a Greater Reality: A Guide for Conscious Evolution by Robert Brumet.

For those of you reading along, you may have felt a bit overwhelmed by the amount of philosophical and metaphysical material that was presented. Chapter two was a bit like drinking from a metaphysical firehose, so just take what you are able to digest for now.

The main takeaway is that there is a far greater purpose to evolution. We are being called to recognize this in order to participate in the fulfillment of that purpose. Our participation is imperative.

I know, yet another thing to add to your endless to do list! Rest assured, you have already been a part of this process as you have sought to grow, and heal, and expand in your own life. Personal transformation is the individual expression of the collective experience of evolution. In Truth, the pull that we feel to do this is the pull of Spirit within us. Together, we are waking up to fullness of this experience. We are becoming more aware (more conscious) of all that goes on within us and the power that we have to move beyond our perceived limits. This is how we each participate in conscious evolution!

Most of us think of Charles Darwin when we hear the word evolution.  There are many other scholars and mysitics that expanded on the concept of evolution well before and after Darwin.

“Darwin’s theory of evolution focuses exclusively on biological evolution and generally assumes that evolution occurs from the bottom up….that evolution is pushed upward by nothing but restless dirt.  

{However}, to effectively consider the evolution of consciousness, we must turn this idea on its head, and consider evolution as being pulled from above… evolution must be seen as having a purpose and that all of life and consciousness is being drawn into that purpose. Evolution is not just about the past; it is very much about the future as well”
(Brumet, pg. 33).

In order to understand this 'pull from above' we need to understand the concept of involution.

“With involution, Spirit involves itself in its creation. The created is infused with the Creator. They are not separate. Creation is simply a disguise for the Creator. The physical universe is but camouflage for the Absolute” (Brumet, pg.34).

 

“In the process of involution, Spirit descends down the Great Chain of Being.

With each of these dissents there is an experience of decreasing freedom and awareness, and an increasing sense of separation and objectification. With each descent, Spirit becomes identified with that corresponding level.  


Evolution occurs in the reverse order; as the process by which Spirit unfolds that which it enfolded in involution. Spirit ascends by awakening and transforming into the next level of the Great Chain” (Brumet, pg. 35).

The next level is that of consciousness, and we humans are the crucial link in getting there. The center of our expanded awareness must be grounded in our knowing and claiming that we are Spirit being called to remember itself.  We are involved because Spirit is involved in us.

We are supported in this process by the knowledge that the true source of our power is not limited to our physical body or our mind with its corresponding mental constructs. Though they are useful in their own right, we are being called to see beyond them in order to claim our true source of power: Spirt. We are waking up to realize the fullness of this this power as the foundation for all that is, starting with ourselves.

This is profound teaching of Oneness. Spirit is imbued in all of creation-- from the mountains and rivers with their living ecosystems to your beating heart and powerful mind. 

There is no separation.

The apparent breakdowns that so many of us are experiencing personally and collectively can be understood as the call of evolution itself; calling us to break through to a greater reality.

The Purpose of Spiritual Community

  A spiritual community is one that shares a set of spiritual teachings/practices and creates a safe space for people to learn and grow into them together. Of course, having a safe space to gather is important but physical safely aside, let’s consider Rev. Jim Lockard’s definition of safe space in the context of a New Thought spiritual community:  " A space where one is free to be disturbed enough to look at one’s own beliefs, knowing that the community itself is supportive and caring. A safe space which guarantees no disturbance is not ideal for personal and spiritual growth” ( Being the Beloved Community, (2022), pg.11). Uncovering our core beliefs is a key element of Unity’s basic teachings. We teach that our thoughts, and beliefs along with their corresponding feelings shape our experience. Mystical Awe

Summer of Awe Series  I hope that you have been taking time to notice the plethora of opportunities for awe and wonder that life so freely affords us.   This Sunday we will consider the power and purpose of Mystical/Spiritual Awe. The term mystical here simply means a direct, personal experience of the Divine. There are a plethora of these opportunities to connect. As we discussed last week, many of us feel this powerful connection while “walking in the Cathedral of nature” as Dr. Lisa Miller puts it. In his book Awe , author Dasher Keltner explores how our spiritual life actually grows out of experiences of awe.   Keltner refers to mystical awe as “…the feelings of encountering what we call the Divine, {meaning} what we feel to be primary, true, good and omnipresent” (pg. 195).
