Your Thought Is Your Life

The power of our thoughts is a central component of Unity’s foundational teaching. We believe that the quality of our thoughts directly impacts our experience.
Ultimately, our goal is to grow in our ability to think empowering God (good) thoughts over the more commonly limited, negative or fear-based thoughts. If we truly believe that the nature of God is good- and that we are expressions of that good (God) then it follows that our thoughts should reflect that belief.

This Sunday, we will resume our series looking at the teachings of Jesus as a means for transforming minds, using Discover the Power Within You by Eric Butterworth as our guide.
If effect, Jesus was asking his followers to actually live as if they believed their sacred texts and laws rather than simply reciting them. While many thought that Jesus had come to overthrow the Roman government, he clearly stated that he had come to fulfill the law, not to break it. He was speaking of the universal spiritual laws that were the impetus for the religious laws and regulations of his time. His life was a demonstration of the Truth of Spirit thought to be contained in those laws. This was how he fulfilled the law.

The spiritual revolution that Jesus spoke of was meant to change the way people thought about God, and about themselves, in relation to God. More than just espousing his knowledge, Jesus lived his life as an active expression of his own Divine Nature, above all else. This is how he fulfilled of the law. The same opportunity awaits anyone who believes.

“By whatever definition we hold, Jesus was a mystic of mystics. It has been said that a mystic is one who is no longer mystified by religions, doctrines or theologies. These people are always seen as threatening” (Butterworth, pg. 78).

This Sunday, we consider key passages from The Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus speaks to the power of our Divine Nature and of our thoughts as a way to connect with which with a greater depth within ourselves.

The Sermon on the Mount contains a framework by which we can all claim our mystic capacity via a direct, and personal connection with the Divine. It begins with with the power of our mind to make that connection.

Jesus “realized that the mind is the bridge between humanity and the Infinite, and that the important element in religion is not simply fervency and feeling, but {shaping} thoughts and attitudes” (Butterworth, pg, 74).

“Ye are the light of the world” (Matt 5:14).

Take some time to meditate on the following idea:

“The light of the world is the very spirit of Truth. You are the very activity of God in expression, so there is no place where the light of God is any more present than where you are. And there is no one who is any more privileged than you to shine your light” (Butterworth, pg. 78).

Take time to consider for yourself:
  • Do you believe that this is true? If so, consider how you can live each day more fully from this awareness?
  • If not, consider what thoughts might be limiting this belief for you. Without judgement, might you be able to releasing those thoughts and connect with the deeper Truth of your own spiritual nature?
